POLICING THE POTTERIES

Alf Tunstall's follow-up to his 1st local Police book, 'The Borough Men' from 9 years ago, this time in collaboration with Jeff Cowdell was released in late 2002 and has sold well ever since.  You don't need an interest in the police to enjoy this informative book.  With a fair splattering of intrique, corruption, drunkenness, bravery, humour, and more, these are just a few of the things which this book uncovers.

Policing The Potteries is a substantial book of some 248 pages, and well over 100 photographs and illustrations.  It tells of Hanley Borough Police Force, starting with the very earliest years in 1870 through to and including the amalgamation of the City Force with the Staffordshire County Force in 1968, chronicling many of the important stages of the development of the constabulary in Stoke-on-Trent.

Nothing seems to be new in the world, as the book seemingly uncovers an ongoing battle between the various Chief Constables and the Local Watch Committees for extra funding, a major concern in those early days of the Polic Force, much the same as it is today.  This book is one of our larger format (approx. 185mm x 240mm) it is printed on satin finish paper to enhance the quality of the photographic content and to ensure a nice feel and durability.  The full colour wrap-around cover of an acrylic painting of the old Stoke Police Station by 'In Name Only' author Chris Sheldon, is high gloss laminated to give added protection to the book for years of use.
