ROLL OF HONOUR by C.W. Sheldon only £15.95 'Roll of honour' is Chris Sheldon's second book and tells the story of the brave men from Leek who gave their lives during the First World War. This is another unique publication and follows on the success of 'In Name Only' which told the story of the 101 Leek servicemen who fell during the 1939-45 war. In 1914 when war broke out, Leek men flocked to the colours in droves, ready to 'do their bit' for King and Country and eager for a slice of the action before the fighting was over. Little did they realise that the war would drag on, seemingly forever, and that men would be repeatedly thrown into often futile attacks against an enemy determined to hold his ground. Over 400 Leek soldiers, sailors and airmen, some as young as 17 or 18, died during this terrible conflict and blinds were drawn in almost every street in town. 'Roll of Honour' takes the reader through the main events of the Great War and gives, in chronological order of his death, each serviceman's military details. Name, rank and regiment or unit are recorded, along with his place of burial or commemoration. Where known, the man's age, home address, peacetime occupation and relevant family details are included. This book is the reult of three years of detailed research and draws upon official records and archive material, supported by newspaper accounts and contributions from descendants of the fallen. It includes photographs of many of the casualties and straight-forward maps to help the reader indentify the theatre of war concerned. Read Chapter 1 Read Chapter 2 Read Chapter 15 |
